Central’s Hunter Smith and Altoona’s Hailey Kravetz Named 2024 Altoona Mirror Athletes of the Year

At the 19th annual Altoona Mirror Athlete of the Year banquet, Central’s Hunter Smith and Altoona’s Hailey Kravetz were honored as the top athletes in the area for the 2023-2024 season. The event, held at Lakemont’s Casino, brought together the community to celebrate the achievements of these outstanding young athletes.

Smith, a senior at Central High School, was recognized for his exceptional performance on the football field, basketball court, and baseball field. He was described as not only a talented athlete but also a remarkable person by Saint Francis men’s basketball coach Rob Krimmel. Krimmel highlighted Smith’s growth over the years and praised his dedication to both sports and community service.

On the female side, Kravetz, a senior at Altoona High School, stood out for her record-breaking accomplishments in soccer and track and field. She broke the all-time Altoona single-season goal scoring record in soccer and set new school records in the 300-meter hurdles. Kravetz’s achievements earned her a spot in the upcoming PIAA championships, where she is expected to perform at a high level.

The banquet also featured emotional moments, including the presentation of special awards to athletes who have overcome adversity. Williamsburg senior Ayla Hileman, who returned from a torn ACL to lead her team to the PIAA Class 1A semifinals, was recognized for her resilience and determination.

Overall, the event showcased the talent and dedication of the area’s top athletes, with Smith and Kravetz leading the way as the 2024 Altoona Mirror Athletes of the Year. Their achievements serve as an inspiration to the next generation of athletes in the community.
