Sofia Mavor forfeits a game but advances to state singles semifinals

Yarmouth’s Sofia Mavor, the top seed in the girls draw of the MPA state singles tennis tournament, faced a new challenge on Saturday at Bates College. In the quarterfinals, Mavor dropped her first game of the season against Kira Gregor of Cony, but ultimately secured a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Reflecting on the match, Mavor expressed her initial disappointment at losing a game but quickly shifted her focus to the next set. She acknowledged Gregor’s adaptability in the second set, crediting her opponent for making adjustments to her game.

The semifinals and finals of the tournament are scheduled to take place on Monday at Bates College, where Mavor will continue her quest for the championship title. Defending girls state champion Coco Meserve of Brunswick, the No. 2 seed, also advanced to the semifinals and expressed excitement at the prospect of facing Mavor in the final.

In the boys’ division, brothers George and Alberto Cutone showcased their skills on the court, with George securing wins in the Round of 16 and quarterfinals, and Alberto advancing to the semifinals as the No. 3 seed. The Cutone brothers spoke of their competitive dynamic and how they push each other to excel in their matches.

The tournament’s move to Bates College’s Merrill Gymnasium due to rainy weather provided a unique challenge for the players, with the carpeted courts requiring adjustments in playing style.
