Softball secures a road victory against No. 12 Va. Wesleyan

The University of Lynchburg softball team had an eventful day as they split a double-header with Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. The Hornets faced off against the 12th-ranked Marlins and battled it out in two intense games.

In the first game, the Hornets fell short with a 3-2 loss. Pitcher Kailey Dorcsis, who had been on a hot streak with six consecutive complete games, made an early exit in the third inning after giving up three runs. However, Emily Charlton and Amala Clawson stepped up to pitch shutout innings and keep the Marlins at bay. Lynchburg made a late push for a comeback, scoring two runs in the seventh inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Virginia Wesleyan.

The second game saw a different outcome as the Hornets came out on top in extras with a 9-4 victory. The teams traded blows throughout the game, with Lynchburg ultimately pulling ahead in the eighth inning. Jessica Strickland scored the winning run on a throwing error, and Sarah Watts delivered a crucial two-RBI single to secure the win.

Pitcher Emily Charlton played a key role in the victory, pitching a dominant relief appearance and securing her seventh win of the season. The Hornets are now one win away from matching their total from the previous year and will look to continue their success in their upcoming game against Roanoke.
