Some Doubt the Peace Negotiations in Kenya for South Sudan

Peace negotiations between the South Sudanese government and the Non-Signatory Opposition Group (NSOG) have commenced in Nairobi, Kenya, marking a new chapter in the quest for peace in the war-torn nation.

Since the outbreak of civil war in 2013, various entities including IGAD, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Sudan, Uganda, and the Community of Sant’Egidio have attempted to mediate the conflict. Two peace agreements and an agreement on the unification of the SPLM have been reached, but implementation has been elusive.

Kenyan President Ruto’s proposal for mediation on March 22 was accepted by President Kiir and the NSOG, leading to the current negotiations. However, doubts linger among some locals about Ruto’s suitability as a mediator due to Kenya’s past actions in Juba and Ruto’s business interests in South Sudan.

South Sudanese governance expert Remember Miamingi expressed skepticism about the Kenyan initiative, stating that peace, stability, and democracy remain distant goals for the country. With elections scheduled for December 2024, Cardinal Michael Czerny of the Holy See urged South Sudanese leaders to prioritize peace and democratic transition.

President Kiir expressed optimism about the mediation process, emphasizing the importance of all parties working towards lasting peace and economic development in South Sudan. As the negotiations unfold, the hopes of a war-weary nation rest on the outcome of these crucial talks.
