South Africa has been named the continent’s champion in the 2024 Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) by the World Economic Forum. This prestigious ranking solidifies South Africa’s position as the leading travel and tourism economy in Africa.

The TTDI serves as a crucial benchmarking tool that evaluates various factors such as Infrastructure and Services, Travel and Tourism Resources, Enabling Environments, and Travel and Tourism Policy and Enabling Conditions. South Africa’s top ranking is a testament to its commitment to elevating the significance and contribution of the tourism sector in the country.

Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille, expressed her delight at the ranking and emphasized the government’s mission to further grow the tourism sector. She acknowledged the collaboration between the public and private sectors in driving the sector’s success and highlighted the importance of tourism in contributing to the country’s GDP and job creation efforts.

The tourism sector in South Africa is seen as a vital asset, with Minister de Lille emphasizing the role of the people in driving its prosperity. The government’s continued efforts to support and promote tourism will not only benefit the economy but also contribute to the overall well-being of the people and the planet.

This recognition by the World Economic Forum highlights South Africa’s potential as a key player in the global travel and tourism industry and sets a positive trajectory for the country’s future in this sector.
