Southlake Regional Health Centre is stepping up its fight against women’s cancers with the addition of state-of-the-art technologies, including new mammography machines. Thanks to generous community donor support, Southlake is able to enhance its cancer detection and treatment capabilities, particularly for breast cancer and other women’s cancers.
The new mammography machines will allow Southlake to expand its breast cancer screening program, reaching an additional 1,500 women each year. With new biopsy capabilities, the machines will reduce the number of cancelled exams due to equipment failure, ensuring timely care for women in need. Additionally, women aged 40 to 49 will now be able to self-refer for publicly funded mammograms through the Ontario Breast Screening Program.
In addition to the new mammography machines, Southlake is introducing the MyoSure System, an innovative technology that can help detect female reproductive cancers. This system allows for the precise removal of damaged tissue in a woman’s uterus, supporting faster recovery and reducing the risk of infection. The MOLLI 2® System, a wire-free breast localization technology, is also being implemented to improve patient experience and cosmetic outcomes for women undergoing breast cancer treatment.
Dr. Sara Temple, Surgical Oncologist and Chief of Surgery at Southlake, expressed pride in the advancements being made in women’s health at the hospital. With the World Health Organization predicting a significant increase in cancer diagnoses by 2050, Southlake’s investment in new technologies ensures that women in the community have access to leading-edge cancer care.
The upgrades and advancements in cancer detection and treatment at Southlake were made possible by the generous support of community donors. The HERE is Where Cancer Meets its Match campaign, led by Southlake Foundation, continues to raise funds to support the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre. Through these efforts, Southlake is able to provide exceptional care for women facing cancer diagnoses and treatments.
