Southlake introduces new technology to enhance women’s cancer treatment

Southlake Regional Health Centre is stepping up its fight against women’s cancers with the introduction of state-of-the-art technologies, including new mammography machines, the MyoSure System, and the MOLLI 2 System. Thanks to generous community donor support, these advanced technologies are set to make a significant impact in detecting and treating breast cancer and other women’s cancers in the communities served by Southlake.

The addition of three new mammography machines will expand the breast cancer screening program at Southlake, allowing 1,500 more women to be screened each year. These machines come equipped with new biopsy capabilities to reduce canceled exams due to equipment failure, ensuring timely care for women. Additionally, women aged 40 to 49 will now be able to self-refer for publicly funded mammograms through the Ontario Breast Screening Program.

The MyoSure System, another innovative technology being introduced at Southlake, will help detect female reproductive cancers by removing damaged tissue in a woman’s uterus with precision and minimal invasiveness. This will improve the overall patient experience, support faster recovery, and give more women the option to have children.

Furthermore, the MOLLI 2 System, a wire-free breast localization technology, will provide a less invasive and more accurate alternative to wire-guided localization for breast cancer treatment. These advancements in technology are crucial as the World Health Organization predicts a 77% increase in cancer diagnoses by 2050.
