Southlake’s Cancer Care for Women Enhanced by New Technology

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket is stepping up its game in the fight against breast cancer and other women’s cancers with the introduction of state-of-the-art technologies thanks to generous community donors.

During Cancer Awareness Month, the hospital announced the addition of new mammography machines, the MyoSure System, and the MOLLI 2® System to enhance the detection and treatment of women’s cancers in the communities it serves.

The new mammography machines will expand the breast cancer screening program, allowing 1,500 more women to be screened each year. Additionally, two of these machines have new biopsy capabilities that will reduce the number of cancelled exams due to equipment failure.

Women aged 40 to 49 will now be able to self-refer for publicly funded mammograms through the Ontario Breast Screening Program starting this fall, ensuring early detection and timely treatment.

The MyoSure System, another innovative technology being introduced, will help detect female reproductive cancers by removing damaged tissue in a minimally invasive procedure. This will benefit an estimated 200 women per year, supporting faster recovery and reducing the risk of infection.

The MOLLI 2® System, a wire-free breast localization technology, will also improve patient experiences and cosmetic outcomes for more than 200 women each year.

Dr. Sara Temple, surgical oncologist and chief of surgery at Southlake, expressed pride in the hospital’s commitment to advancing women’s health and improving patient experiences.

With the World Health Organization predicting a 77% increase in cancer diagnoses by 2050, Southlake’s investment in new technologies ensures that women in the community have access to cutting-edge cancer care. These investments were made possible by the generous support of community donors who contributed to Southlake Foundation’s Women’s Health Initiative.

The hospital’s HERE is Where Cancer Meets its Match campaign supports the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre at Southlake, providing exceptional care for women in need.
