Southwest Airlines Raises Ancillary Fees, Angering Loyal Flyers

Southwest Airlines has joined the trend of increasing ancillary fees, much to the dismay of its loyal customers. The Dallas-based carrier recently hiked prices for two popular optional services, EarlyBird check-in and Upgraded Boarding, with maximum amounts now reaching as high as $99 and $149 per traveler, respectively.

This move marks a significant increase of approximately 300% for EarlyBird check-in and nearly 100% for Upgraded Boarding. The airline had previously raised these fees a year ago, making the latest price hike even more frustrating for some frequent Southwest flyers.

The decision to raise ancillary fees comes as part of a larger industry-wide trend to boost revenues from the entire travel experience. Earlier this year, all major U.S. airlines increased their checked bag fees at least once. Southwest, known for not charging for checked bags, is now feeling the pressure to increase profits, especially after a lackluster first-quarter financial performance.

According to airline spokesperson Tiffany Valdez, the price increase is a result of regular evaluations of pricing for ancillary products based on market trends and customer demand. While Southwest offers unique perks like no assigned seating and free checked bags, the recent fee hikes may prompt travelers to consider alternative options, such as opening a cobranded Southwest credit card for complimentary EarlyBird check-ins or Upgraded Boarding passes.

For groups traveling together, the lack of volume discounts on these products could lead to hefty additional costs. Southwest Rapid Rewards elite A-List and A-List Preferred members, however, can still enjoy priority boarding across all flights. As airlines continue to adjust their fee structures, travelers will need to carefully consider their options to navigate these changes effectively.
