Speaker ejects Poilievre from Commons for insulting PM during heated question period exchange

In a heated exchange during question period on Tuesday, Speaker Greg Fergus made the decision to kick Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre out of the House of Commons after a particularly nasty confrontation with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The altercation began when Poilievre referred to Trudeau as a “wacko” for supporting British Columbia’s policy of decriminalizing some hard drugs in an effort to reduce overdose-related deaths. Fergus asked Poilievre to withdraw his “unparliamentary language,” but Poilievre refused, offering to replace “wacko” with “extremist” or “radical.” This defiance led to Fergus removing Poilievre from the chamber.

Following Poilievre’s removal, the entire Conservative caucus left the Commons chamber in solidarity with their leader. Poilievre took to social media to express his frustration, calling Trudeau’s drug policy “wacko” and criticizing the Prime Minister’s leadership.

Trudeau, in turn, engaged in name-calling, referring to Poilievre as “spineless” and accusing him of courting white nationalist groups. The Prime Minister also highlighted Poilievre’s association with individuals like Alex Jones and his visit to a protest camp with ties to extremist ideologies.

The exchange between Poilievre and Trudeau escalated further, with accusations of racism and hypocrisy being thrown from both sides. The incident culminated in Fergus also removing Conservative MP Rachael Thomas from the chamber for disruptive behavior.

The tense confrontation in the House of Commons underscores the deep political divisions and animosity between the ruling Liberal government and the Conservative opposition.
