Faculty, students, and alumni from East Carolina University embarked on a life-changing journey to Peru in March as part of the 2024 ECU and Special Olympics Unified Youth Exchange project. The group seized the opportunity to make a positive impact on individuals with and without intellectual disabilities, fostering a spirit of inclusivity and collaboration.

During their spring break trip, the ECU delegation engaged in a series of activities aimed at promoting accessibility in sports and fostering cross-cultural dialogue. Led by skilled adult mentors, the youth leaders gained valuable insights and hands-on experience, deepening their appreciation for diversity and inclusion.

Dr. Stacy Warner, a professor in the Department of Kinesiology and principal investigator for the exchange program grant, reflected on the transformative experience, noting the profound impact it had on both the participants and the individuals they encountered along the way. The group received support from Special Olympics International, the U.S. Embassy in Peru, and Special Olympics North Carolina, further enhancing their immersive experience.

Highlights of the trip included visits to iconic landmarks like Machu Picchu, engaging discussions with inspiring figures like para swimmer Dunia Felices Rojas, and participation in inclusive activities organized by local organizations dedicated to promoting social change through sports.

The exchange program, which also involved student mentors and Special Olympics athletes, culminated in a meaningful orientation phase at ECU’s Minges Coliseum. The multidisciplinary faculty team from the College of Health and Human Performance played a crucial role in guiding the participants through this life-changing experience.

As the group prepares for the inbound segment of the exchange project in North Carolina, the bonds forged in Peru will continue to inspire and empower the youth leaders to create a more inclusive and compassionate world.
