Legendary hockey broadcaster Bob Cole was laid to rest in St. John’s on Friday, as family, friends, and fans gathered to pay their final respects to the iconic voice of Canadian hockey.

Cole, who passed away at the age of 90 last week, was remembered for his 50-year career that saw him become the soundtrack to some of the sport’s greatest moments. His distinctive voice and passion for the game endeared him to fans across the country.

Former colleague Ron MacLean, who worked alongside Cole for 34 years, delivered a heartfelt eulogy at St. Thomas Anglican Church, where Cole’s family and friends gathered to celebrate his life. MacLean spoke of Cole’s mentorship and mischievous spirit, highlighting the bond they shared both on and off the air.

Former Newfoundland and Labrador premier Danny Williams praised Cole for representing the province with pride and grace, noting that his iconic voice gave the region an international reputation. Fans like Evan Purcell, who attended the funeral wearing a powder-blue Hockey Night in Canada blazer in tribute to Cole, spoke of his electrifying commentary and ability to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
