Podcasting has become a booming $25 billion industry, with top podcasts sharing common traits that contribute to their success. A recent study conducted by software company Podcastle delved into the world of podcasting to uncover what makes these shows stand out among the rest.

Using data from the Apple Podcasts charts and surveying 1,000 podcast listeners, Podcastle identified key similarities among the top podcasts in the U.S. The study revealed that profit is a major driving factor for Americans looking to start a podcast, with the potential for substantial earnings through avenues like podcast ads.

The study found that the average length of a top podcast is 65 minutes, with the most popular format being interviews. The top genres include society and culture, comedy, true crime, news, education, business, health, improv, personal development, and documentary.

Additionally, the study highlighted that successful podcasts often have more than one host and frequently feature guests on the show. Cover art for these top podcasts tends to use black and blue colors, with 52% of cover art not featuring a picture of the host.

Podcast listenership has increased by nearly 70% since 2019, with most listeners tuning in on platforms like Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Listeners are drawn to podcasts that offer entertainment, new information, and expert insights. However, they are turned off by excessive ads and poor audio quality.

Overall, the study provides valuable insights for both new and seasoned podcasters looking to create engaging and successful shows in the ever-growing podcasting industry.
