State Department releases safety travel alert in anticipation of Pride Month

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The federal government is urging caution and alertness for LGBTQI+ travelers in popular tourist spots worldwide. The U.S. State Department issued a security alert warning of potential threats of violence, terrorist attacks, and demonstrations against American citizens, particularly during Pride celebrations and venues frequented by LGBTQI+ persons.

The alert, shared on social media platforms, comes just before the start of the summer travel season and widespread Pride Month celebrations in June. The warning follows a joint public service announcement by the FBI and DHS, highlighting the potential targeting of Pride events by foreign terrorist organizations.

While the State Department did not specify the exact threats triggering the advisory, it acknowledged the long-standing messaging by foreign terrorist organizations encouraging attacks against LGBTQI+ persons. The agency maintains travel advisories for countries worldwide, rating potential risks based on various factors, including dangers to LGBTQI+ travelers.

Travelers are advised to stay alert, enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for alerts from consulates, travel in groups, research safety concerns for specific destinations, plan ahead for transportation, choose highly-vetted hotels, and share itineraries with trusted contacts back home.

As travelers prepare for summer 2024 trips, including Pride month celebrations, taking these precautions can help ensure a safe and enjoyable travel experience. Stay informed, stay vigilant, and prioritize safety while exploring the world’s diverse destinations.
