State Department Says US Expresses Deep Concern to Israel Regarding Rafah Airstrike

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The United States has expressed deep concern over an airstrike in Rafah, Israel, urging an investigation into the incident. The State Department stated that it will closely monitor the results of Israel’s probe into the matter.

According to State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, the recent military operations in Rafah have not been as extensive as those in central or northern Gaza. The Biden administration has cautioned Israel against launching a large-scale military offensive in Rafah.

The U.S. emphasized Israel’s obligation to adhere to international humanitarian law, minimize civilian casualties, and ensure the flow of humanitarian aid to those in need.

The airstrike in Rafah on Sunday resulted in a devastating blaze in a tent camp, claiming the lives of at least 45 people. Israel claimed that the target was two senior Hamas operatives and denied any intention to harm civilians.

Global leaders expressed shock at the incident, particularly as it occurred in a designated “humanitarian zone” where displaced families sought refuge.

Miller stressed that Israel should avoid conducting strikes in designated safer areas and must make every effort to prevent civilian harm during military operations.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with Rafah being a crucial entry point for relief efforts before Israel escalated its offensive. The conflict has resulted in over 36,000 Palestinian casualties, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

The U.S. continues to call for accountability and the protection of civilians in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza.
