North Korea conducted its first nuclear counterattack drills, led by leader Kim Jong Un, in a show of strength and warning to its enemies, state news agency KCNA reported on Tuesday. The drills simulated the country’s “nuclear trigger” management system, with artillery forces participating in the exercises.

The reclusive state fired several short-range ballistic missiles towards the sea off its east coast on Monday, according to South Korea’s military. The drills were part of testing the nationwide nuclear management system and showcased North Korea’s diversified nuclear capabilities.

Kim Jong Un oversaw the simulation drills, which involved maneuvering troops in nuclear counterattack posture and firing artillery with mock nuclear warheads. The exercises were conducted in response to what North Korea deemed as “provocative and invasive” military exercises by the U.S. and South Korea.
