Nobles County in Minnesota is gearing up for Severe Weather Awareness Week, which runs from April 8 to April 12. While the snow has mostly melted away, recent rain and high winds reaching over 30 miles per hour have served as a stark reminder to residents that unpredictable weather may be on the horizon.

Nobles County Emergency Management Director, Tawn Hall, expressed concerns about the potential for flooding and high winds this spring and summer season. Reflecting on previous years, Hall noted an increase in wind damage and the occurrence of derechos, emphasizing the importance of preparedness.

Hall’s primary focus is ensuring that residents are equipped to handle any weather-related emergencies. She stressed the significance of understanding the difference between alerts and warnings, having preparedness kits, and knowing evacuation procedures.

One of the challenges Hall highlighted is convincing people to seek shelter indoors during severe weather instead of trying to observe the conditions outside. She also emphasized the rapid and volatile nature of Midwest weather, making it difficult to predict where a tornado may strike.

To enhance communication and preparedness, Nobles County has transitioned to the OnSolve CodeRED legacy platform. This emergency alert system will notify residents in multiple languages through various channels, including phone, text, email, and social media.
