Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon to begin four-month prison sentence for defying subpoena

Former Trump adviser and far-right podcaster Steve Bannon is set to surrender to prison on July 1 to begin a four-month sentence after defying a subpoena to testify to a congressional committee investigating the January 6 attack on the US Capitol.

Bannon, who appeared in federal court on Thursday, raged against his sentence, claiming it was an attempt to silence the MAGA movement and grassroots conservatives. Despite the looming prison term, Bannon vowed to continue speaking out.

Last month, federal prosecutors requested that his sentence be reinstated, arguing that there was no legal basis to block him from serving time after an appeals court upheld his conviction. The request was granted by Trump-appointed US District Judge Carl Nichols.

Bannon, who plans to appeal to the US Supreme Court, is not the only former Trump aide facing consequences for defying subpoenas related to the Capitol attack. Peter Navarro, another ex-Trump aide, also received a four-month prison sentence for similar actions.

Bannon’s conviction stems from his refusal to comply with a subpoena from the House select committee investigating the Capitol attack. The committee’s final report implicated the Trump campaign in a conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election results, with Bannon playing a key role in supporting these efforts.

Bannon’s impending prison term marks another chapter in the legal troubles faced by Trump allies, with several others already serving time for various charges related to Trump’s campaign and business dealings.
