Strange Weather Causes Chaos in Tennis Match as Andy Murray Nears Loss

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Andy Murray faced a challenging first-round match at the Geneva Open as high winds, rain, and white pollen disrupted play, leaving the three-time grand slam champion visibly frustrated.

During his match against Yannick Hanfmann, Murray found himself trailing by a set and two breaks when the umpire halted play due to an impending storm. The adverse weather conditions had already caused disruptions, with white pollen from a nearby park blowing over and showering the players during the second set.

Expressing his displeasure with the decision to continue playing in such conditions, Murray voiced his concerns to the umpire during a change of ends. “It’s like it’s snowing out here and you still want us to keep going,” Murray remarked, highlighting the challenging circumstances they were facing.

Ultimately, the game was suspended, and players were forced to retreat to the locker room as the clay courts were covered due to the impending storm. With rain persisting, all play was later suspended for the rest of the day, leaving Murray and Hanfmann to resume their match on Tuesday.

For Murray, this match was only his third since sustaining an ankle injury during the Miami Open in March. The 37-year-old’s lack of form was evident as Hanfmann took a commanding lead, leaving Murray with a tough task ahead if he hopes to progress to the next round and potentially face Novak Djokovic.

Despite the challenges he faced on the court, Murray remains determined to make the most of his time at the Geneva Open as he prepares for what could be his last appearance at the French Open. However, a miraculous comeback will be needed for Murray to advance in the tournament.
