Netflix to Stream Live NFL Games, Starting This Season

In a groundbreaking move that will reshape the sports media landscape, Netflix has secured the rights to stream live NFL games, starting this season. The streaming giant will kick off its NFL coverage by streaming the league’s two new Christmas Day games, which were recently added to the schedule.

This deal marks a significant shift in the way sports content is consumed, as Netflix gains access to one of the most coveted live sports rights in the U.S. The agreement includes streaming rights for the Christmas Day games in 2025 and 2026, with at least one game scheduled for each year. The partnership between Netflix and the NFL is set to run for three years.

Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Bela Bajaria, expressed excitement about the collaboration, highlighting the massive audience that NFL football attracts. The NFL’s Executive VP of Media Distribution, Hans Schroeder, also emphasized the global reach of the partnership, noting that Netflix’s platform will help grow the event for NFL fans worldwide.

While Netflix has previously dabbled in sports content with docuseries and one-off events, this deal marks a significant step into live sports coverage. The company’s co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, emphasized the focus on profitable growth in all programming, including sports.

The NFL’s commitment to expanding its reach is evident in its partnerships with major streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video and YouTube. The Christmas Day games will also be available on broadcast TV in local team markets and the NFL+ mobile app.

With Netflix now in the mix, the next round of rights negotiations in the sports media landscape is sure to be intriguing. The streaming giant’s entry into live NFL coverage signals a new era in sports broadcasting, with fans eagerly anticipating the upcoming season.
