Stuart Bingham shocks Ronnie O’Sullivan in World Snooker Championship quarter-finals

Ronnie O’Sullivan’s quest for an eighth World Snooker Championship title came to an unexpected end as he was defeated by 2015 champion Stuart Bingham in the quarter-finals at The Crucible. The match was a closely contested affair, with both players locked at 8-8 going into the final session.

However, it was Bingham who found his rhythm after the mid-session interval, winning three consecutive frames to secure a 13-10 victory over O’Sullivan. The defeat marked the end of O’Sullivan’s campaign and set up a semi-final clash between Bingham and qualifier Jak Jones, who had earlier caused a major upset by knocking out world No 2 Judd Trump.

Reflecting on his loss, O’Sullivan acknowledged Bingham’s strong performance, stating, “Stuart deserved the victory because he played really well. I tried to fight, I hung in there for as long as I could, but it wasn’t meant to be.” The quarter-final results also saw David Gilbert defeating Stephen Maguire, making it the first time since 1977 that three qualifiers have reached the semi-finals.

In the other semi-final, Kyren Wilson will face Gilbert, as the only seeded player left in the competition after his victory over John Higgins. Bingham, who is through to the semi-finals for the third time in his career, expressed his joy at the achievement, saying, “I’m going toe-to-toe with the best player ever and looking around, this is brilliant.”

The quarter-final match was not without controversy, as O’Sullivan was involved in a dispute with referee Desislava Bozhilova over the positioning of a ball. Despite the incident, O’Sullivan’s sportsmanship was praised by commentators, with former world champion Neil Robertson calling it “the greatest bit of sportsmanship I’ve ever seen.”
