Students at the University of Chicago set up a camp to demonstrate against the war in the Middle East

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Students at the University of Chicago have taken a stand against the war in the Middle East by setting up a camp in the main quad of the campus. This protest comes in solidarity with the ongoing conflict in Gaza, with students demanding that the university divest from weapons manufacturers that supply arms to Israel.

Anuh, a member of Students for Justice in Palestine, expressed the group’s demands, stating, “We will stay here until the university divests every single dollar from companies like Boeing that contribute to the violence in the Middle East.” The tents set up by the students are a visible symbol of their commitment to this cause, with the dean of students acknowledging the situation and monitoring it closely.

Theodore Johnson, the president of Students Disability Justice, highlighted the personal impact of the conflict on his friend, who has lost numerous family members in Gaza. “Her remaining family members are living in a state of precarity,” Johnson shared, emphasizing the human toll of the war. He, along with other protesters, aims to raise awareness about the suffering of those affected by the violence and chaos in the region.

The protest at the University of Chicago is part of a larger movement on college campuses across the country, with students advocating for peace and justice in the Middle East. Johnson emphasized the importance of promoting free speech and expression on campus, stating, “We believe it’s within the university’s power and mission to push for a more just and peaceful world.”

As the tents remain in the main quad, students are committed to continuing their protest until their demands are met. The university’s response to the demonstration has been closely watched, with students hoping to spark meaningful change and draw attention to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the Middle East.

The protest at the University of Chicago serves as a reminder of the power of student activism and the importance of standing up for justice and peace. By raising their voices and taking a stand, these students are making a powerful statement about their commitment to creating a better world for all.
