Students from SMJUSD participate in state education summit for foster youth

Students from the Santa Maria Joint Union School District recently participated in the 2024 California Foster Youth Education Summit, a groundbreaking event focused on addressing the unique challenges faced by foster youth in the education system. The summit, held in Sacramento on April 14-16th, brought together students, educators, and state representatives to discuss strategies for better serving this vulnerable population.

In partnership with Fighting Back Santa Maria Valley (FBSMV), a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting youth and their communities, students from SMJUHSD attended the summit to advocate for foster youth rights and support. The event featured keynote speakers Dr. John Gaines and Dee Hankins, who shared their personal experiences and emphasized the importance of resilience and empowerment.

One of the highlights of the summit was the testimony of Jaida Solis, a student from SMJUHSD, who shared her journey and the invaluable support she received from her mentor at FBSMV. The event showcased the transformative impact of mentorship and community support on foster youth.

Shana Pompa, FBSMV Programs Director, expressed her enthusiasm for the students’ participation, highlighting their dedication to advocating for themselves and their peers. The summit underscored the importance of collaboration, advocacy, and support in creating a more inclusive and equitable education system for all students, especially those in foster care.
