Study finds that a healthy lifestyle can extend life by 5 years, regardless of genetic factors.

A groundbreaking study has revealed that adopting a healthy lifestyle can significantly increase your lifespan, even if you have a genetic predisposition to certain diseases. The study, published in the journal BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine, found that a healthy lifestyle can add more than five years to your life and can counter someone’s genetic risk by 62%.

The study, conducted by researchers from Zhejiang University School of Medicine in China and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, analyzed data from over 353,000 people. They looked at factors such as genetics, education, socioeconomic status, lifestyle choices, and disease history to determine the impact of lifestyle on lifespan.

Participants were assigned a polygenetic score to assess how certain genes affect lifespan and a lifestyle score to evaluate their overall health habits. Over a 13-year follow-up period, 24,239 deaths occurred, allowing researchers to draw significant conclusions about the relationship between lifestyle and longevity.

The study revealed that individuals who led an unhealthy lifestyle had a 78% increased risk of early death, regardless of their genetic risk. On the other hand, those who adhered to a healthy diet, exercised regularly, and never smoked had a significantly higher chance of living longer and healthier lives.

The authors of the study emphasized the importance of a healthy lifestyle in mitigating genetic risks. They found that participants with a high genetic risk could extend their life expectancy by approximately 5.22 years by adopting a favorable lifestyle. This highlights the powerful impact that lifestyle choices can have on overall health and longevity.

The optimal combination of healthy habits, including regular exercise, good sleep, a nutritious diet, and avoiding smoking, was associated with the greatest benefits for a longer lifespan, regardless of genetic background. The study’s findings underscore the importance of lifestyle factors in promoting longevity and reducing the risk of premature death.
