Study finds that specific work shifts could have negative impacts on your health in the future

New research suggests that irregular work schedules in young adulthood may have long-term consequences on health outcomes later in life. A study published in the journal PLOS ONE found that work patterns involving volatility and variability were associated with fewer hours of sleep, lower sleep quality, lower physical and mental functions, and a higher likelihood of reporting poor health and depressive symptoms at age 50.

Dr. Wen-Jui Han, the author of the study and a professor at the Silver School of Social Work at New York University, highlighted the impact of nonstandard work schedules on overall health. The study, which analyzed data from over 7,300 participants, revealed that transitioning from early standard hours to volatile schedules between ages 22 and 49 was significantly linked to poorer health outcomes.

The research also uncovered race- and gender-related trends, with Black Americans and women experiencing higher risks of health issues associated with irregular work schedules. Dr. Xiaoxi Yao, a professor of health services research at the Mayo Clinic, emphasized the importance of addressing the risks posed by nonstandard work schedules, especially in vulnerable social positions.

Experts recommend strategies such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle, establishing a routine, optimizing sleep conditions, and seeking professional guidance to mitigate the negative effects of irregular work schedules on health. By incorporating these strategies into daily life, individuals can proactively promote overall well-being despite the challenges imposed by their employment patterns.
