Ukraine to Launch New Counteroffensive in 2025 with $61bn US Military Aid
In a bold move to push back against Russian aggression, Ukraine is gearing up for a new counteroffensive in 2025 with the help of a $61 billion infusion of US military aid. Jake Sullivan, the US national security adviser, announced the funding package at the FT Weekend Festival in Washington, emphasizing the need to stop Russia from making further gains on the battlefield.
Despite the new aid, Sullivan acknowledged that Russian advances are still expected in the near future, as military operations cannot be instantly reversed. However, he expressed confidence that with the support from Washington, Ukraine will be able to hold the line and withstand the Russian assault throughout 2024.
Looking ahead to 2025, Sullivan revealed that Ukraine plans to recapture the territory lost to Russian forces and push back against the ongoing conflict. This strategy aligns with the White House’s vision for the conflict under a potential second term for President Joe Biden.
While the prospect of a new offensive is promising, it hinges on additional funding from Congress and approval from the White House. Former President Donald Trump, who has been critical of Ukraine aid, has advocated for a quick resolution and negotiated settlement to the conflict.
Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, are hopeful that the influx of weapons and supplies from the US will bolster their chances against Russia. However, addressing personnel shortages and recruitment challenges remains a key priority for Ukraine’s leadership as they prepare for the upcoming counteroffensive.
