Rep. Summer Lee emerged victorious in the Democratic primary for Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District, defeating a primary challenge amidst controversy over her stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict. As a first-term member of the Squad and a rising star in the progressive coalition, Lee will now advance to the general election in the blue district after overcoming Edgewood Councilmember Bhavini Patel’s challenge.

Lee, a top target for both Democrats and Republicans seeking to unseat her, faced criticism for her pro-Palestinian sentiments and calls for a cease-fire during the Israel-Hamas war. Billionaire GOP donor Jeffrey Yass heavily funded a super PAC supporting Patel in an effort to defeat Lee.

Despite the attacks, Lee garnered significant support and fundraising, amassing $2.5 million with a $1.18 million war chest. Her campaign highlighted that she outpaced Patel in fundraising and received endorsements from prominent Democrats like Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, as well as major advocacy organizations.

The race also saw a contrast between Lee’s rejection of corporate money and Patel’s ties to Yass, a Trump donor. Surrogates like Sen. Bernie Sanders emphasized Lee’s fight against the billionaire class, leading to a successful campaign that secured her reelection.

Lee’s victory solidifies her position in the progressive caucus and marks a win for the more outspoken wing of the party. With strong support from various Democratic factions and grassroots donors, Lee’s triumph sets the stage for another term in Congress representing Pennsylvania’s 12th District.
