Sun Belt Conference Reveals Women’s Tennis Awards for 2024

Old Dominion’s Sofia Johnson has been named the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year, leading the way for the annual SBC Women’s Tennis Awards and All-Conference Teams. The announcement was made by the league’s 14 women’s tennis head coaches.

Johnson, hailing from London, England, boasts an impressive 12-4 singles record with a 7-2 mark in league play on court number one. She made her debut in the national rankings at #122 on April 9 and climbed to #118 on April 16. Johnson had a remarkable nine-match winning streak from February to April, securing victories over top teams like Ole Miss, Florida State, and Iowa State.

Additionally, Old Dominion’s Lidiia Rasskouskaia was honored with both the Sun Belt Player to Watch and Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year awards. The junior from St. Petersburg, Russia, had a stellar 16-1 record this spring, with a perfect 9-0 mark in league play on courts four and five.

Furthermore, Ulyana Romanova, a freshman from Kazakhstan, was named Sun Belt Freshman of the Year after finishing the season with a 14-4 record, mainly on court six. Romanova went on a 14-match winning streak and ended with a 9-1 record in league action.

Head coach Dominic Manilla was recognized as the Sun Belt Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season, leading the Monarchs to another successful year. The team’s outstanding performance has earned them a spot in the ITA rankings for the past month.

The 2024 Sun Belt Conference Women’s Tennis Championship is set to take place this week at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Georgia, where these talented athletes will showcase their skills on the court.
