The Marquette County Mavericks are gearing up to defend their Superiorland Baseball League title as they kick off their season on Monday night in Negaunee. The Mavericks, who have won the championship five times in the past, will face off against Hubbards Marsh-The Band in their first game of the season.
Last year, the Mavericks secured their fifth crown in seven years by defeating Hubbards 5-2 in the playoff title game. This year, the league consists of four teams, including the Mavericks, Channing Railroaders, Mikey D’s Beer Cave, and the newcomer Hubbards Marsh-The Band.
The league, which is an adult-level wood bat league, will see each team play seven games in the regular season on Monday nights through early August. The playoffs are scheduled for August 12 and 19, with the championship game set to determine the ultimate winner.
In addition to the league games, the playoff champion will also have the opportunity to compete in the Upper Peninsula Championship game against the top team from the Copper Country-based Twilight League.
While the Mavericks are focused on defending their title, players and teams from the Superiorland Baseball League may also participate in other U.P. baseball tournaments, such as the Leo Durocher Memorial and the Felch Labor Day Weekend tourney.
For those interested in joining the league, there is still an opportunity to be a part of the action and potentially help the league expand in the future. For more information, individuals can reach out to the Superiorland Baseball League on Facebook or contact James Larsen II at 906-360-3674.
