The sun was shining and the leaves were coming out of their buds Friday afternoon as a relative calm reigned over an encampment set up by pro-Palestinian student protesters on the front lawn of McGill University’s downtown campus.

The day before had been misty and grey, filled with relentless noise from opposing protests led by pro-Israel groups. Chants and music filled the air, creating a tense atmosphere on campus.

But on Friday, a sense of calm prevailed, much to the relief of many, including Ghayas Osseiran, a former student at McGill. Osseiran, a supporter of the student protesters, expressed his satisfaction with the peaceful day.

Despite facing opposition from the university administration and a legal injunction request, the student protesters remained steadfast in their encampment. Similar protests at universities in the United States had faced police intervention, but some institutions had begun to engage with protesters’ demands.

McGill president Deep Saini offered to hold a forum to discuss students’ demands, signaling a potential shift in the university’s stance. Mayada Elsabbagh, a McGill professor supporting the protesters, expressed hope for meaningful change.

The movement at McGill was not just about Palestine but also tied to broader global struggles, including climate change. Activists and academics gathered near the encampment for performances and discussions, highlighting the diverse support for the cause.

Despite tensions between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel protesters, the encampment continued to draw attention to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The differing perspectives and emotions on display reflected the complexities of the situation, with both sides advocating for their beliefs passionately.

As the encampment at McGill entered another day, the students remained resolute in their demands for justice and change, embodying a spirit of activism and solidarity that transcended borders and boundaries.
