In a groundbreaking move, a Helsinki-based artisan roastery has unveiled a new coffee blend developed by artificial intelligence, marking a significant shift in the traditional manual work of the coffee industry. Kaffa Roastery’s “AI-conic” blend, crafted with four types of beans led by Brazil’s Fazenda Pinhal, is the result of a collaboration between the roastery and local AI consultancy Elev.
The AI utilized models similar to ChatGPT and Copilot to create a blend tailored to coffee enthusiasts’ tastes, pushing the boundaries of conventional flavor combinations. Founder Svante Hampf expressed excitement about the trial, highlighting the potential of AI to revolutionize the coffee roasting process.
Surprisingly, the AI chose to blend four different types of coffee beans, deviating from the usual two or three, resulting in a well-balanced mix of sweetness and ripe fruit. Following blind testing, Kaffa’s experts confirmed that the tech-assisted blend required no human adjustments, showcasing the AI’s ability to enhance traditional practices.
Elev’s spokesman, Antti Merilehto, emphasized the blend’s ability to introduce new perspectives to seasoned professionals and offer coffee lovers unique taste experiences. The trial serves as a catalyst for future dialogue between coffee professionals and technology enthusiasts in Finland, a nation known for its strong coffee culture and passion for innovation.
As the first step in exploring AI’s potential in the coffee industry, Kaffa Roastery envisions a future where artisan skills and AI-driven data seamlessly converge to create exceptional coffee blends. The project underscores the limitless possibilities AI holds for enhancing traditional craftsmanship and creating unparalleled taste experiences.
