As summer travel season approaches, a new survey of 2,000 U.S. travelers has revealed some interesting insights into their cleaning habits before heading out on a trip. The survey, commissioned by Mr. Clean for the launch of their new Ultra line of Magic Erasers, sheds light on how travelers prepare their homes and belongings before embarking on a vacation.

The survey found that more than 75% of respondents prefer to clean their homes before leaving for a trip, with the average respondent starting their trip preparations over two weeks in advance. The top cleaning priorities before traveling include laundry (77%), dishes (66%), the bathroom (58%), and sweeping and mopping (56%).

Interestingly, 66% of respondents are motivated to clean before they leave because they are excited about their upcoming travel plans. However, the anticipation of a trip can also be a stressor for some travelers, with 51% dreading the thought of having to clean when they return home.

Lydia Joo, brand director at Mr. Clean, emphasized the importance of cleaning before a vacation to help travelers relax and enjoy their trip even more. She highlighted the need for a multi-purpose cleaner that can easily tackle tough messes throughout the home and beyond.

In addition to cleaning their homes, travelers also take the time to clean their most-used travel items, such as luggage. On average, respondents brought their luggage on seven trips, and 26% had cleaned their luggage in the past week alone. Many travelers have felt embarrassed on vacation because some items they brought looked old or worn out, including clothes, shoes, and luggage.

To avoid this embarrassment, 55% of travelers reported that checking the state of their items well before their trip was a high priority. While respondents make sure to clean their luggage and travel bags before their trip, even more travelers clean them when they return home to ensure they are prepared for future travel.

Cleaning luggage can be a challenge for many travelers, with 27% claiming it was the most difficult item for them to clean. Maria Striemer, Global Home Care P&G Senior Scientific Communications Manager, recommended using a versatile cleaning tool like the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to remove scuffs, dirt, grease, and grime from luggage, restoring it to pristine condition.

The survey also highlighted the top items respondents clean before traveling, including laundry, dishes, the bathroom, and more. The data provides valuable insights into the cleaning habits of travelers as they prepare for their summer getaways.

Overall, the survey underscores the importance of cleaning before a vacation to ensure a relaxing and enjoyable travel experience. By taking the time to clean their homes and belongings before they leave, travelers can return to a clean and welcoming environment after their trip.
