Swiatek discusses the high number of injuries following Sinner and Alcaraz’s withdrawals in Rome – Tennis Tonic

Iga Swiatek, the current world no.1 in women’s tennis, has raised concerns about the impact of the regulations governing the ATP and WTA Tours on players’ injuries. Swiatek pointed out that the additional demands of the tour, including mandated tournaments, contribute to the physical toll that players experience. This comes in light of recent injuries sustained by top players like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who were forced to withdraw from the Italian Open due to undisclosed ailments.

During a pre-tournament press conference, Swiatek addressed the issue, stating that the sport has become more demanding with players getting stronger and matches becoming harder to win. She emphasized the importance of scheduling and planning to prevent injuries and ensure players are ready for upcoming tournaments.

Swiatek, who recently won her 21st career title in Madrid, will face Bernarda Pera in the second round of the upcoming tournament. With a 32-4 win-loss record this season, Swiatek has been in top form, winning titles in Australia, Doha, Indian Wells, and Madrid.

Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner, ranked world no.2, and Carlos Alcaraz, ranked no.3, have also had successful seasons, with Sinner winning three titles and Alcaraz lifting the trophy in Indian Wells. However, both players have faced fitness issues, highlighting the physical demands of professional tennis and the need for careful scheduling to prevent injuries.
