Switzerland expresses deep concern over escalating violence in the Middle East

Switzerland Condemns Hamas Rocket Fire on Israel and Attacks on Displaced People in Gaza

At the UN Security Council, Switzerland has strongly condemned Hamas’s recent rocket fire on Israel and Israel’s attacks on a camp for displaced people in Rafah in the Gaza Strip.

Swiss UN Ambassador Pascale Baeriswyl expressed extreme concern about the escalating violence, which reached a new level over the weekend. The population in Gaza, already displaced and facing the threat of famine, is in urgent need of protection and continues to suffer from the ongoing hostilities, she stated in a press release from the foreign ministry.

Baeriswyl emphasized that the “indiscriminate rocket fire” on Israel by Hamas violates international humanitarian law. She also condemned the violence by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, including attacks on UN facilities in East Jerusalem and humanitarian aid convoys.

Switzerland called on all parties to adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law, which require them to take precautionary measures to protect civilians and avoid damage to civilian facilities.

The Swiss ambassador to the UN reiterated the call for an immediate ceasefire, safe and unhindered humanitarian access, and the prompt and unconditional release of hostages.

Switzerland advocates for a two-state solution in which Israel and Palestine coexist peacefully within recognized borders.

In related news, Ireland, Spain, and Norway have announced their intention to recognize a Palestinian state. The likelihood of Switzerland following suit is being questioned.

The situation in the Middle East remains tense, with Switzerland urging all parties to prioritize the protection of civilians and the pursuit of peace through diplomatic means.
