The demand for earthquake warning smartphone apps has skyrocketed in Taiwan following a series of aftershocks that have rattled the island in the past month. With over 1,300 aftershocks recorded after a large temblor hit Taiwan’s east coast on April 3, killing 17 people, residents are eager to get a few extra seconds to take cover in case of another quake.

The government’s automated quake warning system, which sends text messages accompanied by loud alerts, has been criticized for its patchy performance. In response to this, privately-developed quake warning apps have seen a surge in popularity as they offer customized early warnings and additional features.

One such app, Disaster Prevention Information Platform, saw its user base jump to nearly 370,000 from around 3,000 in recent weeks. The app allows users to set their own thresholds for alerts and tracks fast-moving seismic waves from more than 130 sensors installed across the island.

Users of these apps have praised the extra functionalities such as automatic flashlight switch-on, countdown timers, and alerts for smaller quakes that may not trigger official warnings. One user shared how the 30-second countdown provided enough time to prepare and ensure the safety of their family during a recent tremor.

Authorities are considering lowering the thresholds for official alerts to include smaller quakes, but for now, many residents are turning to privately-developed apps for added peace of mind in the face of frequent tremors.
