Tamil Nadu Police Warn Public of Voice Cloning Scam Using AI Technology

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Police have issued a warning to the public about scamsters who are now utilizing voice cloning technology powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) to deceive victims into transferring money.

The scammers obtain voice samples of their targets from social media posts/videos or by engaging in a conversation with them over the phone under false pretenses. Once they have the voice sample, they use AI to clone the voice and make urgent phone calls to people from the victim’s contact list, claiming to be in desperate need of financial assistance due to a fabricated emergency or threat.

“The scammer employs various tactics to create a sense of urgency and emotional distress in the victim. They may use sobbing or pleading tones, pretending to be in dire situations that require immediate help,” an official release stated.

Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Cyber Crime Wing, Sanjay Kumar urged the public to be cautious of such calls and always verify the identity of the caller, especially if they ask for urgent financial assistance.

Tamil Nadu Police advised the public to stay vigilant when receiving unsolicited phone calls or messages, particularly those requesting personal or financial information. They also encouraged individuals to report any suspicious activity by dialing the Cyber Crime Toll-free Helpline No 1930 or registering a complaint at www.cybercrime.gov.in.

In light of this new scam tactic, it is crucial for individuals to trust their instincts, ask probing questions, and verify the legitimacy of any communication before taking any action. Stay informed about common scams and be cautious of unexpected requests for money, especially if they involve urgent situations or emotional manipulation.
