Tea Factories in Gusii Region of Kenya Prepare for Elections

Tea factories in Kisii are abuzz with activity as incumbent directors gear up for elections in the coming months. The campaign fever is rising in Kisii and Nyamira counties as contestants vying for top leadership positions in the tea sector are reaching out to tea farmers for support.

Many sitting leaders in the region are seeking re-election after a successful three-year term, citing the need to continue delivering on their promises to the community. The Tea Board of Kenya has set the elections for tea factory directors for the end of June, adding to the anticipation and excitement in the region.

The small-scale tea growers in the area have seen an increase in productivity recently, with enhanced bonuses being paid out ranging from Sh7 to Sh30 per kg. This positive development has garnered support for the current directors, such as Ombasa Omweno and Abel Kenyoru, from tea farmers in Ogembo and Nyamache zones.

Tom Nyandwaro, a tea farmer, expressed his trust in the current leadership, stating, “We have decided to work with those leaders who have made reforms and let them continue working with us because we trust our bonuses will rise to Sh35 in the near future.”

Abel Kenyoru, who is seeking re-election, highlighted the achievements made during his tenure, including plans to expand tea production and introduce new tea varieties. He urged farmers to increase tea cultivation on their farms and promised to spearhead the construction of a new tea factory in Nyagancha.

As the election season heats up, Kenyoru emphasized the importance of peaceful campaigns free from violence and manipulation, calling for unity and cooperation among all stakeholders in the tea sector. With the support of the tea farmers, the upcoming elections are sure to be a pivotal moment for the future of the tea industry in Kisii and Nyamira counties.
