Teacher and students come together to witness solar eclipse

After nearly 50 years of waiting, a group of former students are finally getting the chance to learn the biggest lesson of all from their retired teacher, Patrick Moriarty, on the day of the solar eclipse.

Moriarty, a former earth science teacher for the Webster Central School District, made a promise to his ninth-grade students in 1978 that they would meet on April 8, 2024, to witness a solar eclipse together. Over the years, this promise became a tradition, with Moriarty keeping in touch with his former students through Facebook and other means.

Now, as the date approaches, Moriarty is preparing to open his home for a reunion of over 100 former students, colleagues, and family members. The event is not just about the eclipse, but about the impact teachers can have on their students, even decades later.
