The Hinsdale Township High School District 86 School Board Meeting on Thursday was a packed and tense affair, as teachers, parents, and students gathered in the Hinsdale South High School cafeteria to address concerns raised by the Illinois Education Association (IEA) and the Hinsdale High School Teachers’ Association (HHSTA).

HHSTA Co-President John Bowman expressed frustration with the current board of education, accusing them of creating a toxic working and learning environment within the district. The IEA also criticized the board for high-level staff turnover and non-collaborative decision-making on school curriculum.

Since the May 2023 election, the district has seen significant changes, including the placement of former Superintendent Tammy Prentiss on administrative leave, resignations of board members, and high staff turnover. The HHSTA also accused the board of micromanaging staff and disregarding recommendations from teachers and administrators.

While the board was caught off guard by the HHSTA’s announcement, some community members supported the recent decisions made by the board, including the ousting of former Superintendent Prentiss.

The meeting took a dramatic turn when former board candidate Andrew Catton made accusations towards Board Member Asma Akhras, resulting in a walkout by Akhras and Board Member Terri Walker.

Despite the tensions, Board President Catherine Greenspon emphasized her commitment to working with all stakeholders for the betterment of the students. The aftermath of the meeting left many unanswered questions as board members refused to comment further on the actions taken by the HHSTA.
