Tech CEOs including Microsoft’s Satya Nadella and Google’s Sundar Pichai join US board to address AI risks

Tech giants CEOs, including those from Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI, are set to join the US Department of Homeland Security’s new advisory board focused on the safe and secure development of artificial intelligence (AI). The board, consisting of 22 members, aims to guide the government on combating AI-related disruptions that could impact national security, public health, or safety.

In addition to CEOs from major technology companies, the board also includes politicians like the governor of Maryland. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that the board will help stay ahead of evolving threats posed by hostile nation-state actors and reinforce national security.

High-powered members named to the board include leaders from Adobe, AMD, Cisco, IBM, Nvidia, Delta Airlines, and Northrop Grumman. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella emphasized the importance of deploying AI safely and responsibly, calling it the most transformative technology of our time.

The board is scheduled to convene for the first time in early May to provide recommendations for the safe adoption of AI in essential services that Americans rely on daily. Alejandro Mayorkas, secretary of Homeland Security and chair of the board, highlighted the benefits of embedding AI technology in essential facilities but also warned of the significant risks involved if not deployed securely.

The collaboration between tech industry leaders and government officials underscores the importance of addressing AI-related challenges to ensure the safety and security of critical infrastructure and daily life for Americans.
