Tech Staffing Firm Settles with DOJ After Posting ‘Whites Only’ Job Advertisement

In a shocking turn of events, a Virginia-based tech company, Arthur Grand Technologies Inc., has been fined for a job posting that explicitly requested “whites only” to apply. The Justice and Labor departments have imposed a civil penalty of $7,500 on the minority-owned federal contractor, along with ordering them to pay $31,000 to 31 individuals who raised complaints about the discriminatory posting.

The job posting, which was for a Salesforce business analyst and insurance claims position in Dallas, restricted eligible candidates to “only US Born Citizens [white] who are local within 60 miles from Dallas, TX [Don’t share with candidates].” This blatant discrimination sparked outrage on social media and prompted an investigation by the Justice Department.

Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke expressed her dismay at the use of such discriminatory language in job postings in the 21st century. The company, however, denied approving the posting and claimed it was posted by an employee working for its subsidiary in India.

The Justice Department found that the listing violated the Immigration and Nationality Act, while the Labor Department determined that the company had violated an executive order prohibiting federal contractors from discriminating based on race, national origin, and other protected characteristics.

As a result of these findings, Arthur Grand Technologies Inc. will be closely monitored for compliance with anti-discrimination laws, undergo training on the Immigration and Nationality Act’s requirements, and revise its employment policies to ensure inclusivity and fairness in its hiring practices.
