Technology company develops purification system that turns canal water into potable drinking water

Around 24,000 homes in Scotland rely on bottled water or private water supplies, both of which come with their own set of problems – from high costs to environmental concerns. The issue is further exacerbated by the fact that nearly 45% of plastic bottles end up in the ocean, contributing to pollution and the breakdown of microplastics.

Enter IF, a technology company that has developed a miniature vapour compression distillation system that can purify previously untreatable water in just 45 minutes. This innovative system, which does not require consumable parts or chemicals, has the potential to provide clean and safe drinking water to thousands of people in Scotland and beyond.

The technology has already been adopted by Portsonachan Hotel & Lodges in the Scottish Highlands, which has struggled with peaty water supplies and the high costs associated with purchasing bottled water. The hotel’s decision to implement IF’s technology not only aligns with their sustainability values but also ensures that guests have access to high-quality water during their stay.

With the support of funding from Zero Waste Scotland and Edinburgh Climate Change Institute, IF is poised to make a significant impact on the access to safe and reliable water supplies globally. The company’s CEO, Duncan Peters, emphasized the importance of addressing the growing challenges related to water purification and the need for innovative solutions in the face of environmental degradation.
