Tennessee Celebrates Black Music Month and Juneteenth with Vibrant Events

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 31, 2024) – As Black Music Month and Juneteenth celebrations converge in June, Tennessee is gearing up to showcase its rich Black music heritage through a series of extraordinary attractions that pay homage to the state’s deep-rooted musical legacy and the contributions of Black artists throughout history.

One of the highlights of the month-long celebration is the National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) in Nashville. Dedicated to preserving and celebrating music genres created, inspired, or influenced by African Americans, NMAAM offers a lineup of special events for Black Music Month. From a Mixology Class to a Bridge To Broadway Block Party and a Juneteenth Community Day, visitors can immerse themselves in the essence of African American music history.

In Memphis, music enthusiasts can explore the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, which delves into the history of soul music with exhibits featuring iconic performers like Otis Redding and Booker T. & the MG’s. Visitors can also tour the legendary Sun Studio, known as the Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll, where rock legends like B.B. King and Howlin’ Wolf recorded groundbreaking tracks.

Further south in Brownsville, the Tina Turner Museum at Flagg Grove School pays tribute to the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll with a collection of memorabilia showcasing her illustrious career. In Chattanooga, the Bessie Smith Cultural Center honors the legacy of the Empress of the Blues with detailed exhibits and memorabilia.

Beyond these iconic attractions, Tennessee offers a plethora of Juneteenth celebrations, including festivals, live music, historical tours, and educational events, highlighting the resilience and contributions of Black Americans. From Nashville to Memphis to Chattanooga, the state is set to commemorate Juneteenth in a meaningful and impactful way.

As visitors and locals alike come together to celebrate Black Music Month and Juneteenth, Tennessee stands as a beacon of cultural richness and historical significance, inviting everyone to join in the festivities and honor the legacy of Black music and culture.
