Legendary actor Terry Carter, known for his iconic roles in shows like Battlestar Galactica and McCloud, has passed away at the age of 95. Carter’s son confirmed his death to The New York Times, although the cause of death has not been disclosed.
Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Carter made history as one of the first Black actors to be a series regular on a TV sitcom with his role as Private Sugarman on The Phil Silvers Show. He also gained recognition for his portrayal of Colonel Tigh in Battlestar Galactica, Sgt. Joe Broadhurst in McCloud, and Michael Anderson in Foxy Brown.
In addition to his onscreen work, Carter made significant contributions as New England’s first Black TV anchor and newscaster, reporting for WBZ-TV Eyewitness News in Boston. He also served as the station’s drama and movie critic from 1965 to 1968.
Throughout his illustrious career, Carter received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Informational Special for his work on American Masters. He is survived by his wife, two children, a granddaughter, and cousins.
The entertainment industry mourns the loss of a trailblazing talent whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
