Texans acquire Stefon Diggs in trade with Bills: Evaluating the major deal for unhappy Pro Bowl receiver

The Stefon Diggs era in Buffalo has come to an end with a blockbuster trade that sent the four-time Pro Bowl receiver to the Houston Texans. The Bills finalized the deal on Wednesday, receiving a 2025 second-round pick (via Minnesota) in exchange for Diggs. Additionally, Buffalo will send a 2024 sixth-rounder and a 2025 fifth-round pick to Houston along with the star receiver.

The trade marks the end of a somewhat toxic relationship between Diggs and the Bills organization. Signs of discord were evident, with Diggs hinting at his desire to leave Buffalo through cryptic social media posts and missing mandatory minicamp last year. Despite a strong start to the 2023 season, Diggs’ on-field chemistry with quarterback Josh Allen seemed to wane as the year progressed.

Diggs, who arrived in Buffalo in 2020 after a trade with Minnesota, had a stellar first season with the Bills, leading the league in receptions and receiving yards. Now, the 30-year-old receiver joins a rising Houston team led by quarterback C.J. Stroud, the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year. The Texans’ receiving corps, which already boasts talent like Nico Collins and Robert Woods, now adds a top-tier playmaker in Diggs.

As Houston’s offense gains a significant boost with Diggs in the mix, the Bills face the challenge of reshaping their wide receiver room. With Diggs gone and Gabe Davis departing in free agency, Buffalo’s receiving options are limited. The Bills will need to address this gap, either through aggressive moves in the NFL Draft or strategic acquisitions in the offseason.
