Texas House Speaker Overcomes Challenge From Far-Right Opponents

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The speaker of the Texas House, Dade Phelan, emerged victorious in a hard-fought runoff election on Tuesday, defeating a first-time candidate backed by former President Donald J. Trump and his Texas supporters. The race, which took place in a southeast Texas district encompassing part of Beaumont, was marked by intense political drama and record-breaking campaign spending.

Millions of dollars poured into the campaigns, with wealthy donors from both sides backing their respective candidates. Despite trailing in the initial round of voting, Phelan managed to rally his supporters and secure a decisive victory in the runoff.

In his victory speech, Phelan denounced the attacks against him as based on “lies” and “deceit,” declaring that his district was not for sale. The close call for Phelan, who had not faced a challenger in a decade, is expected to have significant implications for Republican politics in Texas.

The race highlighted divisions within the Republican Party, with hard-right factions seeking to oust Phelan, whom they view as insufficiently conservative. On the other hand, the party’s old guard, including former governor Rick Perry, rallied behind Phelan in a bid to defend his leadership.

While Phelan is likely to win re-election in his strongly Republican district in November, his position as speaker of the Texas House is not guaranteed. With potential replacements already being suggested, a renewed power struggle looms over control of the state legislature. The outcome of this election sets the stage for a contentious battle for the future direction of Texas politics.
