Thailand and New Zealand Vow to Strengthen Economic Ties as They Set Lofty New Trade Goals

Thailand and New Zealand have pledged to enhance economic cooperation with the goal of tripling two-way trade by 2045. The commitment was made during the visit of New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to Bangkok, marking the first visit by a New Zealand leader to Thailand in 11 years.

During his visit, Luxon met with Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin at the government house, where they discussed various aspects of bilateral relations, including trade, education, investment, visa arrangements, tourism, transnational crime, and cybersecurity.

“We have agreed to elevate Thailand-New Zealand relations to a strategic partnership in 2026 or sooner, which will mark the 70th anniversary of our diplomatic relations. This will create the momentum for us to further expand and deepen cooperation in all dimensions,” said Srettha during a joint news conference.

Luxon highlighted the significant growth in trade between the two countries since the signing of a free trade agreement 20 years ago. He announced an ambitious goal to triple two-way trade by 2045, emphasizing the commitment to explore new opportunities for economic cooperation.

In addition to trade goals, the two leaders discussed tariff-free entry for all Thai and New Zealand imports starting January 1, as well as plans to facilitate visas and resume direct flights between the two countries. They also signed agreements to enhance cooperation in education and aviation supply, repair, and maintenance.

The leaders also addressed the situation in neighboring Myanmar, expressing concern over the recent developments in the region. Overall, the visit underscored the commitment of Thailand and New Zealand to strengthen their economic ties and deepen their partnership in the years to come.
