Despite advancements in nutrition science and breast milk research, very few companies are motivated to translate these advancements into better products for babies’ health. The infant formula market is dominated by two companies that have controlled the industry for decades, limiting innovation and competition.

Creating a new and advanced product in the infant formula industry is challenging and expensive, leading many newcomers to opt for white-labeling existing formulas to enter the market quickly. This lack of innovation has resulted in limited options for parents and babies, with the industry giants remaining unchallenged.

To address this issue, there is a need to incentivize companies to prioritize innovation and infrastructure in the infant formula industry. This includes raising the bar for claims and requiring clear package labeling, safeguarding store-brand generics, and establishing a financial incentive program to build additional domestic manufacturing facilities.

It is crucial to diversify the formula supply chain and drive scientific discoveries to ensure that parents have access to a variety of high-quality options for their babies. Without these changes, the industry remains at risk of facing future shortages, putting the health and well-being of infants at stake.
