In a world dominated by smartphones and digital technology, the traditional phonebook seems to be on its last legs. With the rise of Google and other online search engines, the need for a bulky book filled with phone numbers and business listings has diminished significantly.
Residents in Bridgewater, N.S., like Wayne Desouza, now turn to the internet for any phone number needs. Even younger generations, like University of King’s College student Bjorn Schmidt, are unfamiliar with the concept of a phonebook, associating it with old payphones.
Despite the decline in usage, phonebooks still serve a purpose for some demographics. According to Canadian Association of Retired Persons COO Bill VanGorder, around 30% of seniors do not have internet access and rely on phonebooks for information. However, even they are feeling the effects of the shrinking phonebook, with fewer names and numbers available.
Not only are phonebooks becoming obsolete, but they also contain incorrect information. Halifax resident Bernice Murphy-Critch found her own phone number listed incorrectly in the book, highlighting the flaws in relying on outdated printed directories.
With advertisers slowly shifting their focus to digital platforms, the future of phonebooks looks bleak. Digital anthropologist Giles Crouch predicts that phonebooks may disappear within the next five years if advertising dollars continue to move away from print media.
As technology continues to advance, it seems that the days of flipping through a phonebook to find a number are numbered. The question remains, who will be the last users of this once essential household item?
