Dejan Bodiroga and Paulius Motiejunas Outline Ambitious Future for EuroLeague

In a meeting with selected journalists in Berlin, former EuroLeague MVP Dejan Bodiroga and longtime Zalgiris board member Paulius Motiejunas discussed their new roles and outlined the future of the competition. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the league, their vision appears to be both ambitious and positive.

Motiejunas emphasized the importance of unlocking the league’s potential and working with potential investors to expand into new markets such as Berlin, London, and Paris. While attendance is on the rise, there is still work to be done in conquering new territories. Bodiroga highlighted the potential in the Middle East, with offers to host Final Fours in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The league is also exploring opportunities in Dubai, but timing is crucial for their expansion plans.

With the IMG deal set to expire in 2026, the next few years will be crucial in shaping the future of the EuroLeague. Motiejunas expressed interest in extending the 10-year licenses to 20 years for added stability. Everything, including naming rights and potential expansion, is being considered as part of the league’s roadmap for the future.

However, there are some challenges on the horizon, particularly in London. The ownership situation of the Lions has raised concerns, with financial issues casting doubt on their EuroCup presence. The EuroLeague is closely monitoring the situation and expects the owners to address their concerns.

Additionally, discussions with FIBA are ongoing to establish a long-term solution that avoids scheduling conflicts with national team games. Bodiroga stressed the need for a better and permanent solution to ensure the success of both the EuroLeague and national teams.

In comparing the EuroLeague to the NBA, Motiejunas boldly claimed that the EuroLeague offers a better basketball product. While acknowledging the NBA’s success, he emphasized the need to learn from them and improve the business aspect of the EuroLeague.

Finally, the issue of Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos’s behavior was addressed. While acknowledging his contributions to European basketball, both Bodiroga and Motiejunas emphasized the importance of emotional control to protect the integrity of the competition.

Overall, Bodiroga and Motiejunas’s vision for the EuroLeague’s future is one of growth and innovation. With plans to expand into new markets, establish long-term partnerships, and improve the overall product, the EuroLeague is poised for an exciting and successful future.
